OUR BREEDS
The Persian
So, what is the first thing you think of when you think of a Persian?. That iconic flat face, That long flowing coat. The Persian has been a popular breed for many years. The breed represents the largest class in shows and it boasts the largest number of registrations per annum. So named for their country of origin, Persia. They are a medium sized breed. They have sweet gentle personalities and are creatures of habit. Due to their long coats, they require daily grooming and regular bathing to keep them looking good. They are indoor cats. Persians love serene and quiet homes. With large, expressive eyes, and a voice described as soft, pleasant and musical. Due to the flat face, Persians are prone to certain health problems that need mention. Breathing difficulty or noisy breathing due to their constricted nostrils. Excessive tearing of the eyes which require daily cleaning. Heat sensitivity due to their long coats. Hairballs also pose a problem. A predisposition to ringworm also due to their long coats. Persians do not fair well around boisterous children and other pets. They are more at home in a quiet environment where they can exist in serenity and peace. Persians enjoy love from their owners and will return the love tenfold.
The Exotic Shorthair
So what is an Exotic Shorthair?. It looks like a Persian, but it isn’t a Persian. With today’s busy lifestyles people who like the look of a Persian but don’t have time for the daily grooming demands, the Exotics are the best kept secret of the cat fancy. Also a medium sized breed. The Exotic is bred to meet the Persian standard in every way with the exception of the coat, which is thick, plush, dense and short. This gives them that rounded teddy bear look. Due to the short coat, the Exotic requires much less grooming. As a result, they are sometimes called the ‘lazy man’s Persian’. There is not much difference in the temperament between the Persian and Exotic. Exotics have a quiet, endearing nature. The Exotic is quiet, sweet, peaceful and affectionate. They do not demand constant attention. Very playful and love toys. They possess the same risk when it comes to health issues as with the Persian. Exotics mature later than most other breeds. All things considered, the Exotic is a wonderful addition to any family. Adorable to look at, peaceful and clean, what more could you ask for in the perfect pet. The Exotic really is the “best of both worlds”.
Show Vs Pet Quality Understood
Show Quality
A show quality kitten is a kitten that conforms to the breed standard for the breed. This means the kittens features conform to what the ideal Persian or Exotic looks like. The kitten could be showed at a CFSA show and possibly do quite well on the bench. The most obvious feature being the flatness of the face (which is what most people are wanting when they are looking at our breeds) In the above picture, Gato Exotique Cleo is of show quality. The face is flat, she has big open eyes. Her expression is open.
Pet Quality
A pet quality kitten will have a feature that does not conform to the breed standard. In other words, as depicted in the above picture of Gato Exotique Tyler, his face is not flat. He has a slightly protruding nose and this would be seen as a fault should he be put onto a show bench. He is thus of pet quality. He is by no means considered to be a lesser pedigree
